Oldies, but Goodies ~ Writing & Math Workshop

These activities took place shortly before Winter Break, but boy were your children working hard!

First up, in Reader's Workshop we compared and contrasted two versions of the same story.  After listening to the Gingerbread read alouds and completing story maps for both stories, students had to independently complete a Venn Diagram. Then, over two days students wrote a paragraph about the books similarities and the following day they finished up by writing the second paragraph contrasting both stories.

Our listening center was stocked with holiday books.

During guided reading after finishing a book, small groups completed a Roll & Retell activity.

During the last ten minutes of Writer's Workshop some students share what they've worked on.

Before each math unit students take a pretest. After a math unit is completed students take the post-test.  The following day they are handed back the pre- and post-test to analyze.  After jotting down both scores they need to write a least one thing they noticed.

In math, our main focus has been geometry with an emphasis on identifying and sorting 2- and 3-dimensional shapes.

We continue to rotate through math stations during math workshop.  Below you will see a TON of pictures of some of the activities students completed before the break.

Work with the Teacher: Sorting polygons based on the specified attribute.

Game: Time Concentration

Pages: Working in math journals

Game: Spin the Spinner and Sort by the Attribute

Finally some of the places we found Snowball each morning.
